Family life is sometimes complicated, and celebrities are not exempt from that. You’d be surprised how many celebrities hide painful family secrets and what a terrible childhood some of them had.

Unfortunately, those who spend their lives in the limelight cannot hope to hide anything from the press, and we’ve seen many celebrities airing their dirty laundry on national television. Here are a few of the most troubled family relationships in showbiz.

10 Jaid Barrymore

The whole world fell in love with Drew Barrymore when she made her debut on the big screen in E.T., at the age of 7.

However, following her meteoric rise to fame, her mother’s relationship turned sour to the point that, at the age of 14, Drew Barrymore sought legal emancipation.

Drew was quite the rebel, but her mother could not provide the guidance the child star badly needed.

Just think that the girl first went into rehab at the age of 13! What sort of parent allows such a young child to become addicted to drugs and alcohol?

9 Jon Voight

Angelina Jolie grew up resenting her father, Jon Voight, and it was only after her kids were born that the two mended their relationship. Jon Voight and Marcheline Bertrand separated when Angelina was barely one year old.

As a kid, she barely had any contact with her dad. Her mother hated having to give up her career to take care of the kids while Voight’s fame was growing, and she transmitted this resentment to little Angelina.

8 Chrystal Workman

Modern Family star Ariel Winter had a terrible relationship with her mother, Chrisoula “Chrystal” Workman.

It seems that Mrs. Workman could not cope with her daughter’s fame and abused the girl, both physically and mentally.

Things came to a head in 2012 when social services removed Ariel Winter from her mother’s home. Her older sister Shanelle Gray took care of her until 2014, when Ariel Winter became an emancipated minor.

7 Michael Lohan

If you’ve ever thought Lindsay Lohan is a bit on the wild side, the reason is to be found in her troubled childhood and her tense relationship with her father, Michael Lohan.

The singer’s parents separated for the first time when Lindsay was three and had a complicated relationship until they finalized their divorce in 2007.

Lindsay often witnessed her father’s violent outbursts and protected her younger siblings from his abusive behavior.

6 Ryan O'Neal

When you hear the name Tatum O’Neal, you instantly associate that with Ryan O’Neal. Indeed, Ryan O’Neal is Tatum’s father, but the truth is they barely spoke while the girl was growing up.

In 2011, they tried to make peace and starred in a T.V. show called Ryan&Tatum, but it was too little, too late.

5 Eric Roberts

One look at Emma Roberts, and you’ll know exactly who she is related to. Julia Roberts, of course. Emma is the daughter of Julia’s brother, Eric Roberts.

To understand what sort of guy Eric Roberts is, suffice to say Julia Roberts had to step in and help her sister-in-law Kelly Cunningham get custody of little Emma when the two separated. To this day, Emma Roberts is not on speaking terms with her dad.

4 Constance Meester

That’s one hell of a mother. Constance Meester was in jail for drug trafficking when she gave birth to her daughter Leighton, the future Gossip Girl star.

Leighton Meester had a pretty tough childhood, always choosing sides in her separated parents’ many scandals. When the girl became famous, Constance shamelessly borrowed money from Leighton.

The money was intended to pay for Leighton’s brother’s medical expenses, but guess what? Constance spent them on plastic surgery!

3 Edward Butera

If you wonder why you haven’t heard this name before, that’s because Ariana Grande doesn’t like to talk about her estranged father.

Things are so bad between her and her dad, Edward Butera, that she swore she wouldn’t invite him to her wedding.

She’ll have her mother walk her down the aisle rather than have to face being in the same room, or church, with her lousy parent.

2 David Cassidy

The Partridge Family star David Cassidy split from Katie Cassidy’s mom when she was just an infant.

As a result, Katie Cassidy, who rose to fame with her role in the T.V. series Arrow, grew up with a stepfather and had no relationship with her biological father.

In a recent interview, David Cassidy said he was real proud of Katie, but even he acknowledged there’s no place in her life for him.

1 Nancy Dow

Thou shalt not speak evil of the dead, but Jennifer Aniston’s mother was a real b*tch. A very jealous woman, Nancy Dow was always critical of her daughter and even wrote a sort of memoir full of juicy gossip bits to cash in on her daughter’s fame back in the days of the hit T.V. series Friends.

Things were pretty chilly between the two, but in later years, Aniston did the right thing and took care of her mother’s medical bills. Do you know how Nancy repaid her daughter? She cut her out of her will.
