We’ve all heard the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. She went into their home, ate their food, and slept in their beds, and in the end, she was caught, and they all gobbled her up.

The story teaches the important lesson of respecting the space and property of others.

Most importantly, it teaches a vital lesson about bears. They will gobble. You. Up. Bears are beasts that deserve our respect and avoidance at all costs.

Even the most kindly seeming bear can overpower any man, no matter how strong he is, and tear him apart.

Such a thing happened to an unfortunate couple—one who had a fascination with nature, with animals, and with bears. Tim “Grizzly Man” Treadwell was the victim of this Goldilocks scenario.

He came to wear the bears lived, and papa bear found him and gobbled him up. Alive.

10 /10 An Early Fixation

Ever since he was a child, Timothy loved teddy bears. He grew up with a childlike attraction to bears and animals due to his surroundings. His only exposure to nature from early on was in the safest possible form: commercialized and soft.

When he grew older, he kept that innocent fascination and ended up treating real animals the same way: like toys, he could control.

9 /10 Addiction To Danger

Before becoming a staunch activist, Timothy suffered from addiction to heroin. He grew up in New York with a dysfunctional, broken family until he moved to Long Beach, California, where his drug use began. He started vacationing in Alaska each year to meet the bears and get closer to them.

He documented his trips and sold the footage to pay for more extended stays, creating a compelling and deadly cycle that led to his demise.

8 /10 Alaskan Tourism

Tim’s preservative hiking and documentation hobby, filming the wilderness and wildlife in Alaska, was not looked on fondly by Alaskans. Those who lived in the Great Wild know better than to camp out where the predators roam.

Humans are just as many animals as anything else to a hungry bear. But to Tim, he continued into his 40s regarding them with the same splendor that a child would at a zoo.

7 /10 The Bear Whisperer

Tim thought of himself as a kindred spirit with the bears. They weren’t just his favorite animal; they were his bond. He counted himself as among them when they moved.

He got up close to them, played with them, and tried to talk with them. Occasionally, it resulted in incidents.

He ran from angry bears, but only after they proved mad at a distance. Every other animal in nature was supposed to be his friend. Or so he thought.

6 /10 The Last Camping Trip

Tim brought his girlfriend Amie Huguenard out to camp with him in October of 2003. They arrived via Air Taxi from Tim’s long-time friend, Willy Fulton, in Katmai National Park on Kalifa Lake’s upper side.

ven before leaving, Willy Fulton noticed something strange going on. As he passed by for his plane, he saw the bear, the killer itself, and described it as “just the meanest looking thing.”

Tim and Amie did not respond to him as he left or signaled him as he flew over. They were unaware of what would come next.

5 /10 Unseen Aftermath

Willy was the first to witness the scene from the air. He tried passing by to scare the bear away, but between one fly-by and another, he went from seeing the flapping tarps of their tiny plastic tents to a hungry bear on a mound of human remains, chewing meat off of a human rib cage.

He called it into the park rangers who deployed immediately and arrived at the campsite a few hours later and shot the bear dead as it was still there, eating what was left of Tim and Amie. Even their food was left untouched by the bear. It only cared to eat them.

4 /10 Old Nemesis

The bear that murdered the couple was an old friend Tim had met before. An older male, aged for a bear at least, who had avoided him in the past and was reported by Tim himself as one of the meanest bears he’d ever met. Despite that, he kept trying to befriend it with no positive results.

The bear itself was previously tagged and tattooed with a number 141 on the inside of its lip for tracking. Friends of Tim knew it as soon as they heard the news. Bear 141 was Tim’s natural enemy.

3 /10 Chilling Silence

Tim documented everything, and before the attack, he started up his camera in his tent before he left. The recording left behind was all audio.

Amie couldn’t take the lens cap off in time before Tim started screaming at her. Though many tapes have been leaked, all have been debunked.

Those reported on as fair share one similarity only: the bear was silent. They don’t growl or roar like in movies when they feed. They eat. The only ones crying out were Tim as he slowly died, one bite at a time.

2 /10 What Remained

After the bear was taken out, the remains of Tim and Amie were recovered. Four bins of human remains were extracted from the bear’s stomach belonging to both campers.

The most solid remains reported were a ribcage, stripped and chewed, Tim’s right arm detached below the shoulder with the watch still attached to his wrist, and his head, which was severed with a bit of spinal cord still attached, frozen in horror.

1 /10 The Legacy Of The Grizzly Man

A documentary film titled after Tim’s epithet was released and included his whole life story, interviews, and filmed footage of wildlife that he protected and artfully cataloged his death at the hands of the dreadful beasts he tried so hard to watch.

His end was tragic and gruesome and served as a constant reminder to activists that even if their hearts are fair and their causes are noble, nature will not care.

Although bear attacks on humans are rare, they happen, and even if your heart is too small, too big, or just right, a bear will gobble you up all the same.
